Why Formulators Are Switching from Commodity Charcoal

Most activated charcoal in cosmetic supply chains is commodity-grade — untraceable sourcing, inconsistent batch performance, and a sustainability story that doesn't hold up. nacoa™ is a different class of ingredient: clean pyrolysis from plantation-grown Acacia mangium, full batch traceability, and a surface chemistry optimized for rinse-off formulations — not industrial filtration.

Frequently asked

Dominican Republic production, globally ready.
16
Do you support international shipping?

Yes. We export from the Dominican Republic with full customs documentation for both product lines — clean-pyrolysis biochar and steam-activated biochar. Current export markets include the US, EU, and Asia. Landed cost estimates are available on request.

15
What regulatory documentation do you provide?

Every batch — whether clean-pyrolysis biochar or steam-activated biochar — ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA), Technical Data Sheet (TDS), and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Cosmetic-grade orders additionally include INCI documentation (Charcoal Powder, CAS 7440-44-0). We support customer qualification processes and can provide additional analytical data on request.

14
Can you provide a custom particle size?

Yes. Standard cosmetic-grade biochar is a fine powder optimized for rinse-off formulations. Steam-activated grades (food and industrial) can be produced in powder or granulated formats depending on application requirements. Custom milling is available. Contact us with your target particle size distribution.

13
What packaging formats are available?

Cosmetic-grade biochar: 1 kg (sample), 5 kg, 25 kg. Food-grade and industrial-grade steam-activated biochar: 5 kg and 25 kg. Agricultural-grade biochar: 25 kg and bulk. Custom packaging is available for contracted volumes across all product lines.

12
What is the typical lead time?

Sample kits ship within 5 business days of order confirmation. Production orders typically ship within 2–3 weeks depending on volume and grade. Both clean-pyrolysis biochar (cosmetic, agricultural) and steam-activated biochar (food, industrial) are produced in the Dominican Republic. We maintain safety stock for cosmetic-grade orders.

11
What is the minimum order quantity?

Sample kits ship at 1 kg for evaluation. Production orders start at 5 kg for cosmetic-grade biochar (clean pyrolysis). Food-grade and industrial-grade steam-activated biochar starts at 5 kg. Agricultural-grade biochar is available at 25 kg and bulk. Contact us for volume pricing across all grades.

10
How do I get started?

Request a sample kit for your application. We include full documentation so your technical team can evaluate directly. Most cosmetic evaluations take 2–4 weeks from sample receipt.

9
What grades are available?

Cosmetic-grade, food-grade, industrial-grade, and agricultural-grade. Each is produced to different specifications and ships with grade-appropriate documentation. See our Product Grades page for full details.

8
Is nacoa™ production carbon-negative?

Yes. Pyrolysis converts biomass into stable solid carbon. Unlike combustion-derived charcoal, the process sequesters more carbon than it emits — a fundamentally different lifecycle equation.

7
Where is nacoa™ produced?

In the Dominican Republic, from plantation-grown Acacia mangium biomass. Our commercial office is in New York (600 3rd Avenue, Manhattan).

6
What is the minimum order for evaluation?

We ship 1 kg sample kits for cosmetic-grade evaluation with full documentation (COA, TDS, SDS, INCI sheet). Contact us at commercial@nacoabiochar.com for pricing and lead time.

5
Is nacoa™ compatible with clean-beauty and natural formulation claims?

Yes. nacoa™ is produced by thermal pyrolysis alone — no chemical activation, no solvents, no additives, no preservatives, no coatings. The biomass is plantation-grown Acacia mangium from the Dominican Republic. This process and sourcing profile supports clean-beauty, natural, minimal-processing, and sustainability brand narratives.

4
What documentation do I receive with an order?

Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA), Technical Data Sheet (TDS), and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Cosmetic-grade orders include INCI documentation. Formulation guidance and application notes are available on request.

3
What safety and purity testing has been done?

nacoa™ significantly outperforms USP ⟨61⟩ microbiological limits. It is classified as non-hazardous under all GHS categories — no irritation, sensitization, or adverse health effects expected under normal cosmetic use. Heavy metals are well below all international cosmetic safety thresholds. Microbial challenge, preservative efficacy, and formula stability testing: all passed.

2
Why is the BET surface area lower than conventional activated charcoal?

By design. Conventional activated charcoal’s ≥800 m²/g surface area is engineered for industrial filtration — not cosmetic rinse-off, where the product contacts skin for seconds. nacoa™’s 174.78 m²/g delivers the oil-uptake, exfoliation, and visual aesthetics cosmetic formulators need without excessive surfactant absorption, destabilized foam, or unpredictable color bleed.

1
Is nacoa™ a direct replacement for activated charcoal in my formulations?

Yes. nacoa™ shares the same INCI name (Charcoal Powder) and CAS number (7440-44-0) as conventional activated charcoal. It is a drop-in replacement with zero added formulation complexity. The key difference is production method (clean pyrolysis, no chemical activation) and supply chain (single-origin, batch-traceable, carbon-negative).
